Inspired by works including the Book of Kells, Lindisfarne Gospels, Books of Hours and other medieval manuscripts, Nottingham based calligrapher and illuminator Bev Powis is arguably one of the UK’s foremost artists in this specialist area.
While many calligraphers have adopted a more contemporary approach to their artwork, or combine it with other types and styles of art, Bev retains a more traditional approach and utilises the skills and techniques that were employed in the creation of medieval manuscripts. As is typical of those manuscripts, many of Bev’s works feature 22ct gold leaf.
With over 25 years experience, Bev specialises in undertaking commissions, producing bespoke pieces for her clients, which include numerous local authorities, professional institutions, religious organisations, and of course her private clients.
The recent growth of public interest in both genealogy and heraldry has resulted in many of Bev’s private clients enquiring about the production of family trees, or reproducing coats of arms, and this area of work is something Bev finds particularly fascinating.
A full wedding stationery service is also available, including invitations, seating plans, menus and place cards to illuminating photograph albums and reproducing a written copy of the wedding vows.
